Looking for a cross-country skiing adventure? Mark your calendars for the 24 Hours of Telemark, America’s First 24 Hour Cross Country Ski Race, January 8 and 9, 2005 on the Telemark Lodge trail system near Cable, WI. You can ski 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours taking turns with team mates or go solo.
Contact: Dennis Kruse, 715-798-3571 or kruseski@cheqnet.net or www.teamsportsevents.com
CABLE, WI – If you want to get some kilometers under your belt early in the ski season, consider the 24 Hours of Telemark cross-country ski race. This race is for all abilities and motivations whether you want to be competitive or just get in a bunch of K’s in a low-pressure, supportive environment. 2005 will mark the 5th year of this exciting and fun event. A 5 kilometer loop on the Telemark trail system provides a “nearly endless” roller coaster that skis beautifully for both classic and free-style techniques.
“You can make this race your ultimate personal challenge or take a more laid-back approach.”, says Dennis Kruse, the organizer of the event. As a member of the Birkebeiner Foundation Board of Directors, Dennis knows what it takes to put on a top-notch event and how important it is to provide a range of options for skiers of all abilities. “Skiers can choose to spread the work among a team with up to 6 members or select one of the shorter race categories. Or they enter as a team of one and really challenge themselves in the ‘Solo Freak’ category. The race is against the clock. It comes down to how many 5 kilometer laps you complete in 24, 12, 6 or 3 hours.”
The 24 Hours of Telemark provides one of the few team events in cross-country skiing and adds the excitement of skiing at night if you choose the 12 or 24 hour option. Add to that the comraderie of skiing in North America’s first 24 hour ski event and you’ve got a combination that’s hard to beat.
If you hurry you can get lodging right at the venue by placing your reservations with the Telemark Resort and Condos: 1-877-798-4718 or get nearby lodging through the Cable Area Chamber of Commerce: 1-800-533-7454.

Categories Added to 24 hours of Telemark January
11-12, 2003,
Milwaukee, WI &emdash; October 1, 2002 &emdash;The
3rd Annual 24 Hours of Telemark will be held at Telemark Resort
in Cable, Wisconsin on January 11-12, 2003, with 3, 6, 12 and
24 hour divisions.
The 24 Hours of Telemark is a cross-country ski
relay race with teams of one to six members competing against
each other in different age divisions and categories. The team
in each category that completes the most laps on a 10-km course
in 24 hours is the winner. The event was first held in 2000 as
America's first ever 24 hour cross country ski race.
Last year the 24 T, as it is affectionately known,
was the first citizen race to be held that ski season due to low
snowfall amounts around the Midwest. "The only reason we had a
race last year was due to the huge commitment by the Telemark
Resort staff and Cable Area volunteers, who spent the week shoveling
snow back onto the course," commented race director Kevin Eccles.
With nearly 200 skiers and teams competing last
year, this year's 24-T is sure to see a significant jump in registration
numbers. "We are also adding 3 hour and 6 hour solo men's and
women's divisions" added Eccles. "We want to make sure people
know how great the skiing is at Telemark. And with six weeks to
go before the Birkie, the new categories will offer skiers many
options based on their training regimen. It's great way to have
fun and get important kilometers under your belt before the big
ski marathons.""
Last year Chris Ransom won the closely contested
Men's Solo divisions completing an amazing 330 kilometers in just
over 24 hours. Ransom passed second place finisher Michael Schmitz
from Duluth, MN at 18 hour mark, when Schmitz rested and refueled.
This year's race will again be held on a challenging
10-km course on the trails of Telemark Resort, with some slight
changes from last year's course. Telemark, legendary for hosting
the American Birkebeiner ski marathon, is the perfect setting
for the 24 Hours of Telemark according to Phil Van Valkenberg,
Director of Sales and Marketing Telemark Resort. "Telemark Resort
owners and staff are really excited to be hosting the 24 Hours
of Telemark for a third year. Our goal is to reestablish Telemark
as the nation's premier cross-country ski destination. We have
continued off-season trail maintenance to improve the skiing,
even with low amounts of snowfall. This year the 24 Hours of Telemark
will offer an opportunity for skiers to ski the some freshly cut
trails as well as the great existing trail system."
Most skiers will stay at the Telemark Resort, but
other lodging is also available near the event site. To reserve
your room today, please call toll free: 877-798-4718 or log on
to: www.telemarkresort.com or call the Cable Area Chamber of Commerce
at 800-533-7454.
Skiers are able to participate in one of 19 different
categories, including 3, 6 and 12-hour race options for those
not up to the 24-hour challenge. Skiers are required to use lighting
systems at night. Night Pro will be on site with rental units
and rapid chargers. For registration or volunteer information
contact www.teamsportsevents.com, or call 262-549-6801, ext.16.
